Tough Conversations – Bury Your Excuses and Take Charge of Your Money (1:30 mins)
This is the part where I’m gonna have to get a little tough with you.
But since we’re gonna be getting up close and personal with your finances (and me sharing my own mess-ups) I think I have your permission.
There are a couple of things about money that the sooner you accept and understand, the more successful you’ll be, so let’s tackle them now.
1. No one is coming to save you
If you don’t get your finances together.
If you choose to spend all your money, and not follow any of the basic rules we list out in the rest of this course for winning with money, then expect to have a difficult time with your money.
No one is coming to save you.
- Not the government,
- not your parents (unless your family is super rich and they don’t mind taking care of you for life while you blow through their hard-earned dollars),
- not your partner (sure you can marry rich, but how long can you expect to be rich if you don’t follow these rules)
Waiting for a rescuer is a mistake. You are the hero in this story.
2. Everyone Has Privilege, Use Yours
When you read through The Money School, you’ll see rules and statements that force you to take a look at yourself and how you’ve been making decisions.
It’ll challenge you to do better.
And it’s easy to make the excuse that ‘That only will work for students with rich parents’ or ‘that only works for people who make over 6 figures’ or ‘that won’t work for me because [insert whatever you think makes you a special snowflake]’
Believe me, I get it. Shoot, I’ve done it.
This isn’t some ‘pick yourself up by the bootstraps’ type conversation (which I really really hate btw, reality check, some of us don’t have boots to begin with).
But here’s the tough conversation.
Whatever reason you think this won’t work for you, I can guarantee there’s someone in the world that has that same situation (and maybe even worse) who is successfully finding their path, making it work, and achieving their goals.
Everyone has some privilege, and everyone has some challenges they are facing.
The point is to take the PRINCIPLE of the story, and couple it with your privilege/benefits/luck/(whatever you want to call it) to use it to your advantage.
I know.
There are real challenges that people face and maybe it won’t work EXACTLY the same way for you, but tweak it then.
But don’t let people let you that ‘you can’t get what you want’, or that ‘those things don’t happen to people like you’ or ‘set your eyes lower’.
You deserve to win.
You deserve the things you want. But you have to work at it, and see any setback as a setup for a comeback.
Use what you have to get what you want.
Don’t do yourself a disservice by assuming it won’t work for you. Find solutions not obstacles
3. This doesn’t work if you don’t
My last tough convo point? Don’t expect anything if you don’t take action.
Maybe you have to do something different – take a side step to jump ahead, or step backyard so you can get into the right position.
You don’t reach your destination by staring at the G.P.S. You get there when you start following the G.P.S and get moving.
So, with money school, you have the g.p.s. Are you gonna move?
Found out that you gotta tackle your debt. Are you gonna start?
Realizing that you need to earn more to have the life you want. Gonna get that extra job, new job, or ask for more money?
Results require action.
Alright. That’s all. Enough toughies for one day.
Hope we’re still friends, especially since we’re about to get into how you can win 🙂
